Chew The Fat Round One – Gluten Free Gelato
Here it is, the first instalment of “Chew The Fat”. I understand many people eat gluten-free because they choose to or they feel better following a gluten-free lifestyle, which is entirely up to the individual involved. What I find interesting, however, are the stories that unfold when you follow a gluten-free diet day in, day out, because you must do so in order to survive!
The variety of reactions you receive when you tell someone you can’t eat gluten is just amazing. Some people are so positive, some people don’t understand or are simply indifferent and other people are just downright rude and condescending (cue the old “Ohhhh, I feel sorry for you”). I personally am OK with all three sorts of reactions, as they are all an opportunity to turn gluten-free living into something positive.
Admittedly however, I just love it when people embrace gluten-free and my needs or the needs of others (even when that individual or group may or may not follow a gluten-free diet themselves). One such team of people is the wonderful gang at Shakes Gelati Bar in Port Douglas. My husband and I have been regular customers at Shakes on the main street of Port Douglas for some years now. They have some of THE most amazing gluten free gelato and sorbet you will ever taste (more on that via GF in FNQ shortly!) and the owner/operators are just lovely people!
It is safe to say, I have tried every. single. gluten-free flavour that exists at Shakes. True story. I was bitterly disappointed to visit yesterday evening and see that my two most recent favourite (seasonal) flavours had disappeared: number one, Chilli Chocolate sorbet and number two, Super Choc Flake gelato (both gluten-free). As I approached the counter, my favourite staff member disappeared out the back momentarily. When she returned, she presented me with the final serving of gluten-free Chilli Chocolate sorbet that they had saved for me, knowing just how much I adore it! How is that for service – amazing!! You could not have wiped the smile off my face and our friends laughed at how intensely I stared at my sorbet as I savoured every last spoonful!
Shakes Gelati Bar in Port Douglas are just wonderful when I ask about new flavours and they give each and every customer their full attention, particularly if you have any questions as to any ingredients like gluten. It’s legendary people like the team at Shakes who allow people like me to relax and enjoy the amazingness that is their gluten free gelato / sorbet, without feeling judged or like I’m making their job difficult by catering for my needs. Got to love nice people that embrace gluten-free! Now, off for some gluten free gelato I go…
